Do cats pick at their scabs?

I noticed a single scab on my cat's tail two weeks ago. I haven't found any others, so I'm not suspecting fleas. I figured she might have just nicked herself on accident. She was very unhappy with me examining it, so I do believe it causes her pain. I'm a little worried because it still hasn't healed, and a bit of fur around it was matted, which leads me to believe it was picked at and either bled or made puss. It's such a tiny spot that I don't believe it to be a blister or rash, so I'm wondering if it's possible it really is just a scab that she has picked at. It would be a bonus if someone has advice for treating it if possible between now and the vet.
