We've had our dog for over a year, and during her first year she got free nail trims at the vet. Last August we started to grind our dog's nails. It worked out great because she got canned cheese - a high value treat - and we got her nails done. Everyone always recommends peanut butter, but unfortunately, she is picky and HATES it so cheese it is.
Near the beginning of the pandemic, she hurt herself and we eventually got her diagnosed with elbow dysplasia. She's taking the anti-inflammatory Cosequin supplement instead of being on a supplement prescription. We also mad adjustments around our house to make sure she wouldn't be over exerting herself physically. It took about a month, but she's returned to her normal hyperactive self in terms of playtime.
The last two times we've attempted to trim her nails her behavior has completely changed. I asked the vet if they could do it, and she misbehaved there too (which she loves our vet and techs so that's never been an issue before). And by misbehave I mean that her fight or flight has kicked in and suddenly she's struggling to get away. My partner and I aren't sure what to do, or what happened to cause this shift. I mentioned to our vet about the behavior change, and she's not sure what the deal is either.
Should I attempt to reintroduce her to the nail grinder again? Do I need to change to a higher value treat? Is there something else besides clipping or grinding her nails that I can do?
