A few months ago, I developed severe chronic hives all over my body. The doctors gave me a daily cocktail of antihistamines and steroid cream but nothing helped. Eventually, I was referred to an allergist who discovered I had a severe allergy to dust mites and...cats.
I have an adorable cat that I adopted from a shelter many years ago and I don't know what to do. The allergist has said that I'm showing signs of early asthma and that my allergies will only get worse. I'll be getting immunotherapy injections but that takes 3-5 years. I've always been a bit allergic (sneezing daily, itchy eyes, stuffy nose etc) but it's gotten worse over time, apparently because of the prolonged exposure. I always thought I'd get better and not worse from being around my cat...
Has anyone ever had severe allergies to their pets? What did you do?
I love my cat beyond words and just want what's best for her. A lot of sites said to keep your cat away from the allergic person and away from your bedroom, but that's not possible because I live alone and my cat is very cuddly. She sleeps with me every night and loses her mind every time I close a door. I think she'd be miserable if I kept us apart. I would rather keep her close and suffer or let her go to a family who will love her.
Does anyone have any advice?
