Is keeping a cat in a apartment ethical?

Hello all.

I (19M) have moved into a 1 bedroom 2nd floor apartment recently and would love to get a cat to keep me company.

The only problem is the cat would pretty much always have to stay in the apartment as there would be no way for me to let him in or out regularly as I live in the 2nd floor of an apartment block. People say this is fine but there's no way a cat wouldn't be depressed as fuck staying inside all the time.

Am I wrong? Can I keep a cat in my apartment and it be healthy? I always grew up with cats and would love to have a little buddy around but I don't want to adopt one if it wouldn't like being in a relatively small flat all the time.
