I’m not sure if this type of post is allowed or if this is the right place to post about this, please redirect me if needed! I’m fairly new to Reddit. Anyways, my boyfriend of 4 years just recently dumped me and we’ve been living together for 3 years. In that time we’ve have 2 cats and 1 dog. Our very first cat passed away almost a year ago, it was very unexpected and he was young. This was very hard on both of us as this was our first pet we had ever lost. So, about two months after that we got another cat (she’s amazing and we love her). We had always said that if we broke up I would keep our dog and he could keep our cat. However, I never really thought we’d break up (I was wrong). He still wants to keep our cat, and I understand that; I know losing our first cat really really hurt him. I just don’t think that him keeping our cat is the best decision (for her). I’m currently in school to become a vet tech, I’ve grown up with animals my whole life, and I’m just not sure if I trust him or think that he is responsible enough to take care of her on his own. I’m the one that feeds both of them, takes care of their veterinary needs (and pays for most of it), buys their food and any other needs they may have. I just don’t know if he will step up to the plate on his own. I also don’t know how to bring this up to him without it turning into a big fight. I’ve told him I could help him with vet bills and food (I get a really good discount), but I’m just not sure that seeing him regularly once we move out of our apartment will be good for my mental health. I want to be there for our cat but I’m just not sure what to do. If anyone has any advice on this situation, please let me know and thanks in advance.
