My 17 year old cat's ears are incredibly itchy and the vet doesn't know what's wrong. Help?

So, my cat lives with my parents since I moved across the country, but I came home to quarantine for a while and noticed that her ears were incredibly itchy. It was so bad that she had a bloody gash behind one ear. I took her to the vet and they tested for ear mites, but said she didn't have any, and even sent some of her ear debris to a lab, but couldn't find anything. They recommended sedating her and having her ears cleaned, so we did that.

It seemed to be not quite as bad at first, but now she's back to scratching at her ears, holding her ears at an angle, rubbing them against things and shaking her head, etc. From what I've read, it seems like it could be a food allergy (I'm at a loss for what else it could be at this point). We've been feeding her Iams healthy adult cat food for years and years and give her Temptations cat treats.

How do I go about figuring out what she is allergic to? Do you have any suggestions for what to start out with? I'm worried about switching her food over since she's so old-- is this something to worry about? Any help would be hugely appreciated-- I feel so bad for her. Thank you!!
