I adopted Gizmo from an animal shelter in 2013. I've always loved animals, having grown up with rescuing them to find new homes and breeding them with my mum and little sister.
At any given time we had horses, cats, dogs, goats, birds, gold fish and a ferret at one point. A real life animal farm, minutes the psychotic killer animals like in the book.
In 2007 (I was 17) I suffered a spinal cord injury and brain injury. I spent 3 weeks in a coma, 5 weeks in ICU and most of that year in hospital learning everything all over again, without the use of my legs.
I was told by doctors that I would never like independently, let alone own a pet. I survived 5 flat lines, multiple broken bones, the loss of the use of my legs and survived losing my father in 2009. How hard could a cat be?
I love all animals but I've always had a preference for cats so there was no question in my decision of what pet I wanted. But the plus side was having a low maintenance pet.
In 2013 I adopted a 5 month old ginger kitten and named him Gizmo. The first few months were a little tricky because I had to get used to him being there and he had to learn to get out of my way (I ran over his tail with my wheelchair a few times but now he knows to move).
Its been almost 7 years since I adopted him and I love him to bits. He is my rock when I feel small. He is my safety blanket when I feel sad and has stopped me from falling apart many times. (and he poops in the nightmare neighbors yard to show them who's boss).
I love my ginger ninja. <3
