My 13 year old miniature schnauzer suffered from a stroke in the middle of the night yesterday, and we weren't able to get him help until 10 hours later. Despite being in the age where you'd expect dogs to slow down and be more calm, he was still just as hyper and active as always. Healthy. Went on long walks/hikes. Loved to play. Honestly he didn't even look like he had aged much at all and I expected him to make it to 18 at least.
When we got him to the vet he was unable to even move 3 of his legs and couldn't turn his neck to the left. And had trouble staying conscious. Now, a day later, he has trouble walking for more than a few minutes. His balance is definitely off and he can't feel one of his legs. And his hearing seems to be half as good as it was, although it's pretty inconsistent so I cant tell if his hearing got worse or if he's just too anxious to always respond.
But honestly considering the circumstances he should be dead or unable to move, so the fact that he began walking around the house late into day 1 and that now he's able to do a slow "jog" already on day 2 is pretty much a miracle. He still recognizes all of us and keeps up his old habits so hopefully his brain wasn't really damaged.
But he seems sad and scared all of the time. He cant sprint around anymore and has trouble even sitting down. But any time I move to any part of the house he gets up and follows me, often times just staring at me. He seems to be very anxious and I just hate seeing him like this. Despite his insane recovery I have a feeling that he will never get back to how he used to be. I know it must be really hard on him. I feel so bad.. I wish I had noticed something wrong with him earlier. I just thought he was asleep.
Is there anything you guys recommend that I do to help him feel safe, or is it enough to just stay near him and pet him every once in a while?
