New foster (8F,spayed) and the existing cat (3M, neutered) not getting along

Title is the TL;DR version.

About a week ago we started fostering a cat. She was living in a house with 2 other cats and was given up to the vets by the owners daughter, as the owner had advanced dementia. My current cat was adopted 2 years ago and actually had a sister that he was initially bonded with, however the humane society adopted them out separately.

I initially thought they’d gat along great, with these facts in mind. But they most definitely are not. At least not yet.

Initially we let them see and meet each other, and things did not go well, but not bad either. There was some growling and hissing, but that is all.

We’ve kept them separate now, switching them periodically so they get a chance to smell each other. Today, my partner accidentally let them in to a room together and didn’t realize. They were calm and getting along so he tried for longer. After awhile they had a huge fight. Growling and screaming and we had to get the dog to stop it as we would be scratched to hell.

We’ve now separated them and don’t know what tactics to try to get them to accept each other, in the long run we’d love to keep her, but obviously need to make sure it doesn’t negatively impact our male.

What do we do? Any ideas?
