Why the SPCA and other shelters require a fully fenced in property

As a former SPCA employee i was rather concerned when joining Reddit.

There were people posting about how to get around having a fully fenced property as a requirement for adoption. The Moderators supported this saying that a fenced in yard was not a requirement for adoption

I think they were so ok with it is because they believe it is for the dogs enrichment The yard is not for your dogs to play and roam. . You can take them to a park for that

It is for their safety. You are living with a predator whos natural instincts will override your training at times.

There have been cases of dogs pushing past their owners when they are entering or exiting the home, visitors leaving the door open, even Large dogs breaking through windows ,( usually to protect their human). Without a proper fence these dogs are able to get out easily.

Many dogs have been run over by traffic. Some have attacked and killed passing animals, Dogs passing by without leashes have gotten into the unfenced in yards and attacked dogs. In the most extreme case a 'special needs' child was attacked and killed. We had a dog come in with an axe embedded in its skull due to a mentally challenged person walking into the unfenced in yard and attacking the dog.

Please support the SPCA in this matter. Please report shelters who do not consider a fenced in yard a requirement for adoption.

Help keep your and other pets safe.
