My cat is a rescue, he has FIV and is around 10 years old. About 2 years ago I took him to the vets regarding smelly breath and was concerned his weakened immune system was playing a part. He was given some medication to reduce gum inflammation at the time as well as another medicine to administer orally(cant remember what)
On Saturday I found one of his fangs on the floor, entered panic mode got home booked in at the vets.
The vet has told me that with cats teeth if they break off like his has, that the root will be normally be absorbed by the gum. She couldn't tell if his has so suggested he is put under so they can have a look and also give him a dental clean while he is under. She then suggested checking his kidneys. The cost went from around £400 to £600 in about 3 sentences.
I paid £107 for 2 weeks prescription of antibiotics and painkillers for him while I decide what to do.
I can't afford £600 but don't want him suffering. I'm looking at finding extra weekend work to try and fund it in the meantime.
My question is, if as a professional you can leave the financial aspect out, does he need this operation? Or am I being neglectful by not going ahead.
I felt like every time I said yes okay there was another treatment to do. I'm worried that I'm paying for something which could rectify itself by absorbing into the gum is all.
Any feedback is much appreciated, I'm just very worried about my boy and don't want hime suffering.
Due to him being FIV and having claimed for mouth issues caused by FIV I can't claim on insurance for it.
