We recently moved into a new house with a roommate. Our cat is about 3 years old and the roommates cat is about 2 years old. We've kept them in different rooms for about 2 weeks before letting the interact with each other slowly, such as swapping their toys/scratching posts once in a while, letting them look at each other from across the room, etc.
It's been over a month now, and they still fight almost every day. Even when we keep the door closed with one cat in our room, and the other cat outside the room, they somehow find a way to fight from the space underneath the door and we often find them hissing and scratching at each other from the 2 inch gap beneath the door. We stuffed the gap with some towels, but they simply move the towel aside and fight.
Do they need more time away from each other? Or should we keep letting them interact and work it out amongst themselves? It's slightly worrisome since they fight when we are sleeping as well (even if one cat is kept in a room) and causes a racket, waking everyone up. We also don't want the cats to hurt each other (which luckily hasn't happened yet).
