Considering surrendering a new cat due to significant medical bills.

I know people will get upset, but I am not sure what I should do.

Back in December 2020 I found a 5-6 month old cat on the street and I decided to take it home. I did the normal thing such as getting it neutered, giving it good food, lots of toys, cat furniture etc. Overall I feel like I did what I could to get everything the cat needed to live a good life.

However back in may 2021 he started to have an issue with his ear in which there was significant discharge. In total he had 3 visits and prescribed medicine to help his ear all of which costed around 1,000$. Then in July I was advised that all of this occurred because he has something in his ear that needs to be surgically removed. The expected cost of the surgery would be around 3,000$. Although not life threatening, they advised that if he did not get the surgery the problem would continue to resurface.

Now I am at a loss as I am not sure what to do. 3,000$ is a lot of money for me. I had asked friends who have/had cats and they told me they never had something like this happen. That it was odd for such a young cat to already require such drastic measures.

Although I really enjoy having a cat, I can't seem to wrap my head around spending close to 4,000$ in medical bills in just the first 10 months since I've found him. I'm also terrified of the thought of him requiring more medical bills in the future. Especially since he's so young now and I feel like needing medical attention now is a bad sign for the future.

Would anyone have any recommendation as to what I should do. Anyone have similar experienced that decided to go with or against the medical costs? Do you regret it?
