I am extremely frustrated and I'm seeing red, so I'm sorry for ranting or making mistakes.
I brought my 13-year-old cat to the emergency vet on Monday. When I got home from work, he was displaying carpal hyperextension and seemed a little annoyed by it. He was otherwise acting, eating, drinking, pooping normally. Our usual vet couldn't see him for a few days and the emergency vet they recommended was not accepting patients that day.
I found an emergency vet and they squeezed me in. I was very thankful and everyone was kind. They did X-rays (that were unremarkable, as expected) and prescribed meloxicam (anti-inflammatory meds) and gabapentin ( for nerve pain/anxiety). Since the X-rays were unremarkable, they recommended further testing to rule out metabolic issues. I had a feeling that he had been flirting with diabetes for a month or so, so I decided to make an appointment for two days later with our usual vet. I also made a point to tell the emergency vet that our cat was taking steroids for a skin condition. They added this to his file (I watched the tech do it) and it was never brought up again. I gave my cat the medications as instructed as I've done his entire life because I trust vets as medical professionals.
The next day, our cat was completely different. Lethargic to the point where he couldn't stand for more than 20 seconds without flopping on the ground. He had accidents of bloody stool outside of the litterbox. Just weak. I brought him to our usual vet and they were shocked that the vet gave us Meloxicam as it has a pretty strong drug interaction with prednisone (steroids and non-steroids don't mix... duh...). I know vets make mistakes, but this seems like something that should NOT be mistaken. I got his blood test results back today and the vet said he isn't looking good. White blood count is elevated, pancreas is irritated, kidneys are struggling. I am 100% beating myself up for not looking into the drugs before I gave them to him, but I have never had to do so in the past. Our usual vet always advises us on everything about drugs before we take them home.
I've learned my lesson, I'm just praying it isn't at the expense of my sweet companion's life. I'm going to try to call and get a refund for my money, I just feel so guilty for bringing him here.
I guess my post is just a recommendation to ask questions and look into the drugs that are being given to your pets. I think I needed to vent more than anything.
