So I found a roughly 8/10 week old kitten playing in the road a few days ago. I knocked on the door to the closest house with no response. I was going to leave the kitten, figuring he lived nearby, but he followed me for a full block meowing loudly. Finally, I took him home. I made found cat flyers and put them in the mailboxes around where I found him. I also posted his picture on NextDoor.
Three days later his owner gets in touch through NextDoor. They've been out of town and won't be back until Sunday. It was Monday when they contacted me. They said their niece was taking care of him and he "must have wandered off." They asked if I could keep him until Sunday, and when I said no they said I could call their sister and arrange to leave him with her.
Should/do I have to give these people back their kitten? They went out of town for over a week and left their 10 week old kitten to fend for himself, with just a niece occasionally checking in. They do live in the house I found him in front of, but nobody was there when I knocked, so it's not like their niece is house sitting. The cat is free to roam. I feel weird giving him back just so he can get hit by a car or eaten by an animal. We have a ton of coyotes, hawks, foxes, even a mountain lion or two. I don't think this guy will last very long loose.
