Friend's cat was recently diagnosed with Diabetes. His family has decided to euthanize rather than begin insulin therapy. Could switching him to raw food / high protein-low carb wet food treat him at this stage, or would he require insulin?

For context, the cat was very fat a year ago, but has since lost a bunch of weight and began urinating frequently.

A recent trip to the vet confirmed the diagnosis, and a follow up visit to learn insulin-therapy resulted in the decision to euthanize rather than pursue treatment.

To the best of my knowledge, the vet didn't confirm the cat had a short window left or that he was currently in a terminal stage of diabetes; I believe they just confirmed treatment would be required.

My plan was to suggest we simply switch his uncontrolled kibble diet to a raw food / low carb wet food diet to at least try SOMETHING before its too late. His family never really tried to do anything to correct his condition and his diet has always been very unrestricted. The decision to terminate before trying anything corrective whatsoever seems premature.

Would this change in diet result in death, or is there a chance it could work? I don't want to give him hope in the event that it doesn't work, but I also don't want to see a cat put down needlessly.
