gauging dogs behavior and introducing a kitten to them

so I’ve been considering getting a kitten for a while now. My sister is allergic but she just moved out of state and I’ve had a very rough past year and a half and I could use that really happy new kitten energy. Our oldest dog also has hip dysplasia possibly, that surgery is expensive and he didn’t handle anesthesia too well the last time he went to the vet so their is a possibility we may have to put him down, I think I’m trying to fill that void before it exists.

I already have two dogs who are aren’t very particular of cats. I have one 11 year old and a 3 year old “puppy” .They get into it sometimes but it’s never really anything bad , I feel like it’s the oldest trying to correct behavior bc the youngest can have a lot of energy sometimes. The pup I think is actually a pretty friendly dog or has the potential to be but 😕 bc of a very toxic family environment my father (he does not stay with us anymore) used to keep him and the other dog locked up with a baby gate

The reasoning is so ridiculous. He introduced the puppy to one of his friends and they hit it of to the point where when my dad called him over he did not listen very quickly and stayed at the feet of his friend instead, in his temper he put him in the dog room that night and never let him out when new guests even ones who are 100% comfortable with dogs came over after that.

I think he might be conditioned atp. (The oldest already is but we got him when I was a child so that one was really out of my control)to not really like anyone outside of immediate family we used to live with. I think My father got dogs for show and not bc he genuinely cares about them.

I think he could very easily be introduced to ppl but I think my mom is just paranoid , which is reasonable bc our oldest has bit ppl before but they were also someone who did not listen to us in the process. But I’ve introduced our youngest briefly to an ex recently and he did well.

When he was about 2 We went on a walk at a pretty crowded beach and a stranger asked to pet him and he did and he was very nice and didn’t even flinch or bite him. My grandmother came over a few times and he’s never met her but he got the chance to slip away once and went to lay right by her feet. My great grandfather met him and despite being usually rambunctious he laid at his feet and didn’t move until he left.

They (the puppy mostly,)also does bark at the cats that may be in the alley, the cats that may slip into the yard, there’s a dog a few houses down that gets out often, he barks at them too but he also barks at some of the neighbors across the alley, and next door, even the neighbor that gives him treats. Tbh he practically will bark at anything even moving pieces of fabric in the house hell he barks at us just to communicate he has to go to the bathroom.

There is a dog next door that he runs along the gate with to play , so does the oldest but the gate separates them and they’ve never met outside of that.and on walks he has approached other dogs, sometimes smaller ones and bc he’s so big most ppl think it’s him attacking. We’ve also introduced my oldest dog to another puppy before and he did really good, didn’t bite her or anything even let her lick his face and stuff.

This is alot but I just wanted to get a good description of my dog/s behavior. Does anyone have advice on introducing a kitten to your dog? Especially one that may be like this? Or even just advice on socializing your dog better? Sometimes I think bc of all that’s happening he’s got some anxiety of his own. And you can be honest if I shouldn’t get it at all. It’s a expensive purchase so I really need some good second opinions. If I do get it anyways I’m already considering speaking to my grandparents about keeping it. My mom doesn’t seem to nervous when i talk to her about the cat so sometimes I’m not sure what she’s thinking.Do you think I should try and retrain my dogs behavior a bit before taking any further steps?
