I want to adopt a cat, but I live with my elderly grandfather and he often forgets to close the door after stepping out. Is there any way for me to responsibly raise an indoor cat despite this?

Some other considerations:

• My grandfather is in his 80s and has memory problems, so it's not realistic for him to change this habit
• The door being left open is a heavy sliding door
• My grandfather also has balance issues, so the solution can't be a tripping hazard
• My room is very small, so it's not an option to keep the cat in my room all day
