My gf’s cat is over 20. She’s an old fluffball and we love her to death. She’s been. Very healthy kitty up until recently. A couple of months ago she started having a lot of issues going potty outside of her box. She would go potty downstairs at the base of the stairs a lot, and wasn’t eating her food often (which is downstairs).
We took her to the vet and found out she has really bad arthritis. He said surgery at her age would be risky, so we started her on pain meds. She was like a new cat! She started grooming herself again and even played a little when you jiggled a twist tie in front of her.
Then we got a check up and found out her kidneys were going into failure and we had to stop the meds immediately.
We have her on other meds that are supposed to be better for her kidneys, but she’s in pain. She barely walks, and has been going outside the litter box again. She won’t go downstairs except on rare occasion, she can’t climb her steps into bed, and overall she limps so bad it’s heartbreaking.
We’ve talked about maybe needing to put her down…but she’s a healthy kitty otherwise. She’s alert, she yells for attention, and she likes to be near us when we’re upstairs (even if it hurts her to walk over to be near us). We have special food to help keep her kidneys healthy.
Just…should we consider putting her down? This is such a horrible thing to have to debate. We’ve cried so much thinking and talking about it. I want to hear what others think.
