My baby bengal is acting strange

I have two bengal cats, an older female about 1.5 years (Lemon) and a new boy about 6 months old (Basil). Their personalities are polar opposites— Lemon flinches at the sound of pens clicking, is terrified of people, never purrs, prefers to hide under things in your vicinity to be close to you, and always hyper aware of her surroundings. Basil loves head scratches, cuddling with people, purring machine, and will climbing anything (read: everyone) he can, maybe has 2 thoughts maximum at any given time.

Basil was neutered about 5-6 weeks ago, slept the full day once he was home, and pretty much was back to normal the next day. Lemon was spayed around 6 months old.

They both have been acting normally, chasing each other and sleeping (away from each other) as they normally do, tackling each other (Basil will instigate by mounting Lemon when she’s loafing and then bites her neck, and Lemon retaliates by hissing and running away). She grooms him occasionally, and he will groom back sometimes but will always end up biting.

Today Basil out of nowhere started to growl and scream, poofing up whenever Lemon came close. I was working (so sitting in one spot for some time) and they had both just been napping for 3-4 straight, completely normal. Basil’s never made more than a squeak before (he can’t really meow, it’s more like a chirp, and he normally trills and purrs), so I was shocked when I heard it… I thought it was Lemon freaking out about something as she usually does. I’m concerned because it was so sudden and so unexpectedly loud for Basil to make any noise.

He has been hiding on the floor near a blanket hamper ever since quietly growling, when usually he’ll splay out in top of the blankets to nap.

I’ve had to separate them into different rooms because I’m afraid Basil might be too stressed with Lemon around, but also have no idea why. Could it be that he was recently neutered and his hormones are out of balance? They weren’t play fighting or chasing each other when the growling started. And they were both napping and eating together like normal prior to this happening… everything was normal?? Have any of you experienced this before?
