Need advice on what to do with my cats

Sorry, not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I need some advice on my situation as a first time cat owner.

I recently moved back in with my family in the US after living abroad where I adopted 2 stray cats. It was a poor decision to bring the cats back with me since we are 4 people living in a small 2 bedroom apartment. When I was abroad keeping cats was no problem since I had a lot more space. And the cats know the neighborhood, so I wasn't worried about them if they leave the house, where they poop, etc. I guess they're not used to being completely indoors because they keep running around and making a mess. They often relieve themselves on the carpet instead of the litterbox, and leave a lot of fur in the kitchen. Essentially there's a lot of behavioral problems.

Now I feel guilty because my family warned me to not bring them back, knowing situation would be the likely outcome. But I also felt guilty about leaving them because I thought I needed to care after my cats since they're attached to me and each other. I already spent a lot of money moving them here (had to get them vaccinated, microchipped, pay for plane transport). But the situation isn't looking good since my family is bothered by the cats. Especially my mom who does catering and prepares large quantities of food and my cats make that really difficult for her. While they're trying to be understanding, they're also frustrated and I'm not sure I can keep the cats for long unless I move out (which is unlikely in the near future).

So can anyone help tell me what my options are? I'm worried about putting my cats in a shelter especially since I hear that they may get euthanized. I already felt awful since I spent all that money getting them here into an environment that's probably as stressful for them as it is for us. And I want to make sure they aren't separated and can live happy lives in a safe place.
