Hi all-
About 6 months ago I moved into a new house. Sparing everyone the story, the previous owners left behind 2 cats who did their business in the basement for at least a few weeks to my knowledge, possibly more…
Upon moving into the house this spring, I put my own cat’s litter box out on a sunporch that is rarely used. With the cold weather approaching, however, the porch will need to be closed off – so I moved her litter box down to the basement a few weeks ago.
Here is the problem: rather than use the litter box, my cat insists on doing her business (both #1 and #2) on the area where the former cats seem to have done theirs.
We have tried everything – separately cleaning with soap solution, bleach, and vinegar. Didn’t work. After cleaning again with all methods, we covered the area with corrugated boxes. Didn’t work. After cleaning AGAIN, we put the litter box on top of the corrugated. Nope. One foot away on top of the broken down boxes, my sweet kitty insisted on doing her business.
So… what the heck do I do. My house is small, and I don’t have any other options of discreet places to put her litter box. I have a very strong preference to keep the litterbox in the basement, but I’d ideally like to avoid cleaning up the mess she makes every single day.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem? How do I fix it? I’m willing to do anything at this point regardless of time or cost.
Thank you so much in advance!
