Adopting a cat for the first time.. help!?

So since I've lived on my own, the only pets I could afford are fish, because of the pet fees (in apartments).

But fast forward, I'm engaged now and my fiance (who works out of state) wants me to treat myself to a sweet kitty I can love on.

Anyway, so I'm wondering if it is okay to just get one cat (or kitten). I've read that a cat who doesn't have another to play with will end up aggressive. Is this true?

I don't know if we can afford two, but we can definitely afford one. Expenses and all.

I just want to know if a single cat would end up aggressive, like I've read. Help?
