Hey guys. So we rescued a cat last summer (August) that was dumped in our neighborhood.
Feeding him has been an interesting experience. He used to be super food motivated, but now a days his attitude towards food is like “meh. Yes.. food, I have no shortage of this” and has become picky with his eating.
He has however, gained 3 pounds since we’ve had him. I suppose it is safe to say that I am over worrying about his decreased intake of food considering he has gained weight?
He used to eat 2-3 3oz cans of wet food a day, no dry (200-280 calories) to now barely eating 1-1.5 cans a day, with a few nibbles of kibble. (100-200 calories) I added in dry food because of his pickiness towards eating now. He’s 11.7 pounds. Used to be 9 pounds.
I’ve taken him to the vet, and they think it’s all fine, especially since he hasn’t lost weight. His blood work is all normal.
Everything I have read states that cats need to eat 20-30 calories per pound. My vet even said he should be eating 250 calories to maintain doing nothing. I told her how little he eats, and she thought I was not reading the packaging right, saying there’s no way he’s eating that little. >_< but he is. He is clearly not even close to eating these amounts she suggests. Not here he isn’t despite me offering food, trying to get him to eat all the time.
He is still allowed access outside (soon to change due to moving soon) so he may be hunting for mice and who knows, maybe he has other food sources. It’s just alarming for him to eat only 120 calories some days, and he going outside for 6 hours a day. How can 120 that support that kind of activity?
I guess I’d like to know how many calories do your cats eat? Do you think 1 or 3/4 can of Fancy Feast a day, with some bites of kibble (1-2 tablespoons) for a semi active, adult/senior cat is enough?
