I am looking to get a puppy or dog. I already have a few adult cats (7-10 years old). They aren't afraid of dogs, but they hate them (understandably). They have lived with a dog before that LOVED to 'herd' them. Any suggestions for a breed of dog that wouldn't disrupt their lives too much? I assume it would be better to get a puppy so it grows up used to being around cats. Or perhaps adopt an older dog that grew up around cats? I'm not sure. Would it be better to get two dogs/puppies or just one? Either option is affordable.
The cats are mainly indoor, although they are allowed to go outside. The dog(s?) would be allowed inside, of course, but ideally would be spending a lot of time outdoors (either in our moderately sized fenced-in yard or on daily walks/runs).
Other relevant information: there is always someone at home - either an adult or teen. No young kids. Some of us are mildly allergic to animals but generally get used to them (we're not allergic to our own cats but were at first). We don't have any other pets.
Tips on making this a smooth transition are welcome. I have plenty of time on my hands. Thanks in advance!
