Friends with pets

I attend a regular book club at my friend's house. This friend has a cat that is, let's just say, very comfortable. The cat jumps on the couch where I'm sitting, on the table where I have my food, on my lap, whenever I am over for book club. I am slightly scared of cats and get flustered/uncomfortable, which my friend knows. My friend laughs it off and thinks it's funny, and sometimes tries to get the cat to go in another direction. I just feel so on edge while there and I am wondering if I can ask my friend to keep the cat in another room while I am over (2 hours/month). Is this ridiculous to ask for? I kind of imagine that if I had a pet that my guests were uncomfortable about, I would just put it away for a little bit or at least actively watch its behavior. But then again, I don't have pets so I don't know.
