How old before a kitten can be alone in the whole house?

My girlfriend and I just adopted my first ever kitten. We don't know what happened to mom, but he's only 7 weeks old, which I'm told is very young to be alone.

He's getting lots of socialization and love, and explores the house with us adding a room here and there slowly over the last few days. He's been confined to an spare bedroom with all the necessities (litter, food, water, toys, etc) when we're not home.

When is old enough to wander the entire house without us there? We're working on removing hazards, but it seems very soon, and he still seems very hesitant of his space to explore getting too large. I'm also concerned about the little guy trying to sprint out the front door....he does seem like he'll want to, based on our experiences with other doors in the house.

Thanks!
