How to get roommates aggressive cat to accept my dog?

I recently moved out of my parents house, and today my dog moved in with me. The moment he walked in one of my roommates two cats became very tense and territorial. They're about the same size so I didn't really think she had anything to be afraid of, but after about ten minutes, I was getting some stuff out of my car when I heard a loud commotion inside and my dog screaming bloody murder. He was investigating the cat when she got defensive and attacked him. My roommates separated them very quickly so neither was hurt, but it happened again today and none of us will be here to keep the peace during the day tomorrow because of work. For now, my roommates are being really cool about it and are keeping the aggressive cat locked in their room, but this obviously isn't a long term solution, so I'd to figure it out before I come home to a dead cat or dog one day.

My dog usually isn't very aggressive at all (He's kind of a huge wuss) but after the first attack he's been on the defensive as well. Apparently she used to get tortured by a dog a long time ago and now has some sort of vendetta.

How do I get their cat to realize that my dog won't hurt her before he becomes so afraid of her that he might?
