Hi everyone (TL;DR at bottom),
I imagine this has been asked before but I did a search and haven't seen it recently. My boyfriend and I have one cat, Wally. He's a spoiled boy, and the most well-behaved cat on the planet. Doesn't get into plants, doesn't jump on the fridge or counters, doesn't eat or scratch things he's not supposed to, always pees and poops in the litter box no matter what kind of litter I use. He's a skittish boy with people he doesn't know, but he's seriously amazing.
Whenever we go away for a weekend or more, even if it's just a night, we bring Wally to my parents house. He has gotten used to it there and has kitty and doggie friends. About two months ago we booked a one night camping trip for this weekend and arranged for my parents to take him as usual. However, something has come up and they can't take him this weekend and I have no other friends who can (not to mention, it would stress him out as he is a skittish boy). However, if we cancel the trip, we're out about 100 bucks.
You could say I'm a helicopter cat mom and I'm anxious about leaving him. He's pretty independent, not a lap cat, but very loving and sleeps with his mommy and daddy every night. The thought of him sleeping alone makes me sad, but I knew the time would come that my parents wouldn't be able to take him. I am planning to have a friend come and hang out with him few a few hours tomorrow and feed him, and come back to feed him Sunday. I will put out tons of extra food (he is not a big eater anyways), water bowls around the apartment, an extra litter box, lots of blankets and cat beds and lay out some of our clothes with our scent. He has lots of beds and perches in high up places, scratch posts, and an abundance of toys. I will also leave some music on low for him.
Can you guys think of anything else that could make my boy's night alone more bearable? Or can you just reassure me that leaving him overnight one time won't make him hate us and he will be okay? My boyfriend doesn't like the idea of leaving him either but I can't justify losing $100 over this.
(We do plan on getting another cat in the future so he can have a companion. However, it isn't in the budget right now, as my boyfriend is finishing his PhD and we want to make sure we both have very stable incomes before getting another cat to ensure we have proper emergency vet funds for both of them should this need come up. Right now we can comfortably have a fund for Wally but not another cat.)
TL;DR: leaving my wonderfully behaved cat overnight for the first time and feeling quite anxious about it - I'll put out extra food, water, litter and beds, but am wondering if there are any other things I can do for him - any special touches or tricks you might have!
