I’m moving into my parents place with a cat and they own a dog. Usually, the dog is pretty chill around other dogs and cats. He ignores cats for the most part and he’s a toy poodle so he’s around their size. The cat is a little larger than him, he’s a Maine coon mix but he’s pretty shy and scared around new people, cats, and dogs. The dog is around 11 years old and they’ve had him for about that long. and the cat is about 6 years old.
Today, I brought the dog over to my boyfriends place to meet the cat. The dog was pretty chill, ignoring the cat. The cat immediately ran off and got scared. They got to sniff each other, but at one point we let them loose and the cat hid. Then the dog went up to the cat to sniff him and the cat swiped at him with his paw. The dog got scared and ran off, then came back and barked at him. We immediately stopped this and grabbed the dog away. The dog didn’t show any other signs of aggression otherwise.
I’m moving into my parents place in about a week, how do I get them to get along? Or at least tolerate each other? I know the dog will be fine as long as the cat doesn’t hiss or scratch him. The dog is also territorial.
