How to tell between a stray/community cat and a free-roaming, but owned, one?

I have a cat that visits the house regularly, and I've seen her out at all hours, walking up and down the alley behind my house (I live in a terraced street in the UK). I worry about her, as there are other, much bigger cats that roam the alley too and are very territorial.

She doesn't wear a collar, but I know that's hardly an indication of whether she's owned or not. She's not shy about coming up to the house, and she lets me stroke her if I'm slow and she sees me coming. She's shy and startles at sudden movements and loud noises. She doesn't like being picked up, but doesn't scratch or bite when I've tried (only tried twice, but she gets scared and scarpers when I put her down, so I don't try to anymore).

She was skinny (but not malnourished) when she first started coming 'round, but we give her tuna, ham slices, beef, chicken (whatever meats we have really) so she's started a bit more weight.

Essentially, is there a way to know if she's owned without trapping her and taking her to a vet to find out? I've never owned a cat so I don't know what's typical behavior.

I apologise if this is the wrong or inappropriate place to ask about this.
