How to tell if your cat is sad or even depressed?

I have a 2 year old cat who isn't too fond of being alone and will not go outside by himself unless he REALLY wants to or someone is outside to go with him (he's like a baby in that regard). In a family of 6 I'm probably the only one that plays with him, with my dad and one of my younger sisters only paying attention to him now and then when they feel like it.

I'm currently at a period of time where I really need to work on my college work, so that means I'm a lot more on the computer and less attentive to him beside his basic needs.

He's often in my room and likes to sleep on and under my bed when there is nothing else to do or if he's tired, but I feel like recently he hasn't been as engaged to play in the opportunities that I am able to play with him, he doesn't want to go outside even when I am out and it is warm outside and overall he just seems a bit more quieter. I don't know if he's eating properly or not I haven't been paying attention..

Is there signs that would say if he's sad about the situation or feeling lonely, even depressed? There's always someone present in the household but like I said I am probably the only one who plays with him.
