I currently live with my wife and our cat Coco (approximately 9 years old).
For context, Coco was adopted as an adult cat by my wife while we were still dating and living separately. She is very much a one-human cat who prefers my wife’s company but tolerates me. She does however come to me when I offer her cat treats.
We moved in together about a year ago from today. She works at a conventional 9-5 job while I work at home as a freelancer. When it’s just the cat and me, Coco rarely approaches me proactively (unless treats are involved). However, when my wife is home, the cat is far more affectionate towards me, randomly coming for headbutts and pets.
I’m sure the short answer behind this change in personality is “because cat.” That said, could long term cat owners provide any insight? I grew up in a pet-free home so this is the first time I’ve lived with a pet.
