Moving across the United States. How should I get my dog there?

So the title kind out outlines my concern.

I'm moving from Michigan to Seattle, and I need to get my dog (80 lbs pit/hound mix) there and I was hoping for some input on the two ways to go about it: flying to driving.

I see pros and cons with both. If he was to fly, I would do Delta, which supposedly has the best accommodations for pets. The pros are that it is quick (just get a sedative from the vet I suppose), he doesn't even have to really know what's going on, and he doesn't have to spend time away from me. The cons are, of course, the horror stories you hear about pets in cargo; I'd never forgive myself if something happened.

For driving, I've looking into having a company drive him out there. I supposed it would be safer than him being put in cargo. But I'm concerend about him being away from me for 3ish straight days, stuck in a crate with people he doesn't know; I think that could be really tough on him mentally.

I could also drive him myself, but that sounds like a nightmare.

I was just wondering if anyone could give me some input on their experience with any one of these three options for moving a pet about 2000 miles (give or take)
