I live with someone who doesn't wash their dog at all and does not cut it (his hair is down to his paws). He's a king charles spaniel. He has a hear condition which makes him pant and has arthritis. I can't imagine that having to carry so much fur is good for him. He's a sniffer dog so he's constantly picking up dust and debris off of the floor. When he's doing his business, I can see him trying to stop his tail fur from touching his shit.
I also saw underneath his fur patches of dead skin which caused him discomfort when I touched them. In fact, he always seems uncomfortable and on edge.
I gave him a bath for the first time in over a year and he looks much better. But he still needs a haircut.
