My cat loves to chew on things and unfortunately, sometimes that includes me. I will often be sitting on the couch when he will dive into my feet and start to bite, which I have taken to mean that he wants to play and release some pent-up energy.
The biggest issue I’m having figuring out his behavior is that even when we are both playing together with toys, he will sometimes lose interest in the toy only to bite my feet/ankles again. I’m trying to understand how my reaction to this isn’t sending a clear message to him.
Usually I will stop playing with him at that point and walk away or go to another room so that he knows playtime ends when the biting begins. Other times I will try to redirect the biting to the toy by having it near his mouth when biting, but that only works for a moment. This has lead me to believe it has less to do with his energy levels since he is already being active when it starts much of the time.
I realize that my response isn’t super consistent and that’s because I’m not sure what response is the right one. Is there any way to stop this behavior? I’m more than happy to elaborate on any points if it helps to understand the situation. Thanks!
