My (inside-only) cats are brothers and have grown up with me since shortly after birth 3 years ago. They have been living with me at my mom's house for the last couple of years.
A couple of days ago, while I was at work, someone must've left a door open and one of the cats (Cat A) got out. No one realized it until 8 hours later when I got home. Once he was let in, Cat B seemed to think he was a threat or didn't recognize him and attacked him. They were quickly separated (and have been since the incident) and unharmed, but Cat B now growls and hisses uncontrollably anytime Cat A is in sight.
I have tried reintroducing them slowly over the past couple days with no luck. Today when I got home, I washed them both to reset any scent unfamiliarity. They have been kept on separate floors with only a few times of me holding Cat B wrapped in a towel and being brought in sight of Cat A (still a distance away) until Cat B become aggressive.
I will continue trying to get them to be friendly again, but as for now, I am at a loss. They have been pretty much by each other's sides since I got them 3 years ago, and now Cat B can't seem to get over what happened the other day. What should I do?
P.S.: They have both been neutered, if that matters
