Puggle breeder took deposit months ago, no word since

I'll start by saying we adopted our first dog and we love her and wish we could have adopted again. But since trying to get a companion for dog, we ran into some very shady characters working at "rescues" (seems funny they all have the 'high demand' dogs and none that really needed rescuing, but anyway...) so decided we'd spend an extra hundred to go through a breeder. Did plenty of research, realizing that dealing with anyone over the internet/phone is a risk of being ripped off.

We found a (what seems like) a reputable breeder, and contacted them via email. They responded a few days later and seemed very genuine, asking about what specifically we were looking for. After this was done, they asked for a $300 security deposit and a form. This seemed pretty standard from what I had seen, so I sent the deposit via PayPal. The same day the breeder responded that they got the deposit and we were the first to deposit for the upcoming litter which was due in March - April. It was currently January at the time of contact. The breeder said they typically keep them for 8 weeks before they can go to their forever home, so, sometime in June.

Fast forward a couple months later to March, to when the breeder finally emailed me back again. To summarize, they had a 2nd generation litter coming up and two are even black! ... except we specifically said we wanted a first generation and fawn-colored when I filled out the form. I politely explained this and they responded with "Thanks for letting me know your plans. I'll keep you updated." As of today I have yet to hear from them.

I have been emailing them back, asking for updates and have yet to hear anything.

The point of this post is to get any recommendations on how to handle this. I have all but written off the $300, and not too upset about not getting it back - I blame myself for trusting them, especially after the experiences I had with various rescue operations. I am pissed though. I'd like to make sure this breeder who comes up in the top results of any google search for puggles is no longer able to operate like this.

Thanks in advance.
