My family will be traveling from the NJ area to VA Beach in a few months. It'll be the family (7 ish people) along with our 3 family dogs. I'm wondering if I should bring my cat along for the trip or if she would be happier at home on her own.
Some background: my family and this cat has made this trip before. A couple of years ago, we brought her with us to our rental property. Ahead of time, I got her some sedatives from the vet (Xanax) and gave her half of a 25 mg pill, following a test run a couple weeks prior. She spent about 6-7 hours in her carrier and she seemed to sleep most of the time. Once we got to the house, she seemed to do fine overall. We ran into a little problems when we came back. The sedative didn't seem to help and she was very vocal throughout most of the ride home. Other than the ride back, we thought she did well on the trip.
Since my family will be doing this again, I wanted to get thoughts on whether I'm overly stressing out my cat for no reason or if she would be better joining us. If she didn't come, my normal cat sitter would come once a day to care for my cat during that week. I don't know how well she does being left alone for a week in the house with just check-ins because I've never left her alone for more than 2 full days.
What's your thoughts? Is it worth bringing her or should I keep her at home?
