Starting to really hate my cat in his old age:\

So I've got this really old Maine Coon. He's about 19 years old now, and I've had him for about half that time.
He's always been a bit of a jerk - and that was part of the appeal - but now as he gets much older he's becoming really difficult to live with. Especially as I work from home a lot now.

To start, he's super-vocal. And, I think, going a bit deaf so he's even louder. I'm talking it's like he full-on shouts at you when he wants something. Or for no reason at all. Friends actually call him Mr Shouty sometimes. And he shout-meows over everything: jumped up on his chair: have a good shout about it for a few minutes. Wants a drink of water? Better shout into his water bowl a few times before getting started. Used the litter tray? That's a shoutin! Sometimes he'll just wander into an empty room and shout at nothing for a bit. Walk in to see what's up - he sees you and shouts a bit even louder before pottering off to get some food like nothing ever happened.

Great.

A few years ago when he started getting worse we took him to a vet, and they diagnosed hyperthyroidism, so we give him neo-mecazole twice a day for that. It helps a bit, but mostly just knocks him out. We do checkups every few months and, apparently, everything's going well.

Mainly he just sleeps, shouts and eats. Maybe half an hour a day he'll be in a good mood and come over to hang out like old times.

I don't know if he's in pain, bored, feeling sick, completely losing his mind, or is just a jerk. Maybe all of the above.
I still love the little guy, and would never do him harm. But do find myself thinking if I woke up and he'd passed in his sleep, that would be fine too.

Any advice?
