I have a glass covered deck and attached porch, I was sitting on the deck when my cat who had been sitting on the porch did a backflip, fell hard, then stumbled into the deck moaning and spurting blood from her left hip. I was a Marine and saw combat, so I grabbed an old IFAK from a closet and staunched the bleeding using some quick clot infused gauze. Upon examining the wound, it was a small hole about the size of a pencil tip and I knew automatically somebody had shot my cat. I guessed with a high velocity air rifle since the wound was too deep for some pissant bb gun, too small for a regular gun, and I didn't hear a shot despite sitting only 10 feet away.
I bandaged the wound and had my wife call the veteranarian who makes house calls, then set off down the street to the sheriff's office (small town, I live three blocks from the station.) A block down a teenage boy with a .17 caliber high velocity air rifle walks around the corner, sees the blood on my hands, and automatically blurts that he was target shooting and accidentally hit my cat.
I grab his gun, tell him if he doesnt want it wrapped around the nearest telephone pole he will come with me. In the cop shop they ask him why he did it and he insists it was an accident. Except 4 other people call in while they are talking to him to report that thier pets have been shot in their yards with an air rifle, and a pair of kids say that a young man with a rifle yelled profanity at them and threatned to "put them down like old yeller."
Long story short, the cops have him now and my cat is gonna make it, but will probably have a bad limp for the rest of her life. I guess I'm kind of just incredulous at the moment. Maybe nobody will believe me, and i thought about posting pics but theyre pretty bloody and depict my cat in a state of extreme trauma so I decided not to post them.
Just be aware that there are fucking psychos out there and your pet may not be safe even on your porch 10 feet away from you in broad daylight. 3 blocks from a police station no less. Be ready to provide proper care if some crazy shit happens.
