So long story short, I work at Petco and working at a chain pet store while simultaneously spending time online learning about different pets and their care has got me thinking about a few things. Like, a lot of things sold at chain pet stores really aren't suitable for the pets they sell and they don't tend to educate customers properly. I've been thinking about the idea of opening my own pet store that would actually educate the masses while selling appropriate products, some probably home made. For example: kaytee trails will not be sold at my theoretical store, but I will have home-made bin cage kits that come with the appropriate material for hamsters. Of course I'd have different sizes and materials for different customer desires.
Also, I would not SELL any animals at my store. Any animals that come through my store would be adoption only. Which would probably mean I'd have times where I don't have any animals in the store, but I would much rather customers know that any animals they get from my store is 100% guaranteed to be adopted rather than bought. I'd also give them ACCURATE INFORMATION on their animals regardless of how likely they are to adopt them after being told and I'll refuse to adopt out an animal if the costumer refuses to get the proper materials. Using the earlier example, I'll inform every customer that a bare minimum cage size for a hamster is 450 square inches and if they insist on using something smaller then they won't be walking out with a per.
Idk, this is probably just a pipe dream I've cooked up and will never become a reality (also, this probably isn't an original idea and probably have been done before) but I was just really curious and wanted some thoughts on things. If I DID make this a reality, what would I need to do? Anyone with experienced in running pet stores? I just want to make a company that actually puts the animals first and the money second.
