Adopting a kitten who's mother had feline leukemia. Help me understand what that means.

A friends mother's cat had a litter and we were interested in adopting one of the kittens. But we are now hesitant due to learning that the mother had feline leukemia.

From what I understand the cat can be immune to it and thus it lives a normal life. Or it's not and doesn't live very long at all.

To add to the confusion is it would be a 2nd cat in the household and obviously we want to protect our current cat.

Can anyone help me understand if I should be worried about this kitten or the danger it could put our current cat in?
