Conflicted about getting another cat

Over a month ago my partner and I adopted our sweet little calico, Basil. She adjusted to living with us very quickly, loves cuddles and play time and seems to really like being our cat. When we adopted her the shelter told us she was a year and 4 months but surprise! The vet says she’s most likely no older than 9 months old. Our issue arises with our schedules. We’re both students and, although we are home as much as we can be, there are two days of the week where we can barely come home for 6 straight hours. She came from a family that had 9 other cats (her parents and the rest of her litter, plus a few others I believe) and because of that we have started to feel really guilty about leaving her home alone when we do. We would hate for her to get lonely especially since she came from a home with so many cats, and knowing that she got along well with the other cats at the shelter. There’s also times where my partner and I need to do homework and can’t be giving her the playtime she wants in that moment. We have the means to adopt another cat financially and in our lease, we just don’t know how much more it would be to handle with time and everything else.

So, my question is: what is your experience getting a second cat/how long did you wait to get a second cat? Those of you who waited a bit longer (say, over a year) what was that experience like? Otherwise, what are some tips that you would give to a relatively new cat owner on giving your cat the best life possible or entertaining them when you aren’t home?
