I haven’t been letting our cat sleep with us because I have allergies, but I feel sooo guilty.

My girlfriend found a kitten on the street almost 3 months ago. She was about 4-6 weeks old (hard to tell because I think she may have been a little malnourished). She also had cat herpes in her eyes and a little pneumonia. We were taking care of her while trying to find a home for her. However, we really started to care for her as we nursed her back to health. We had to take her to the vet, give her eyedrops, feed her, give her medicine that was very tough to make her take. But we did it all and fell in love with her in the process.

Things are pretty great overall with her. We love cuddling and spending time with her whenever we can. The problem is I feel so guilty for making her stay outside our bedroom. Especially because we live in a small apartment (however, we are trying right now to move to a much bigger apartment).

I have recently had some asthma problems come up that have not bothered me since I was a child. It is possible it’s from our new kitty, but the problem also coincides with us moving to our current apartment. We had it tested and they said the formaldehyde is 5x a safe level. Formaldehyde causes respiratory problems. I feel like it’s smart for me to have a space that is away from car fur, because of my allergies and my current asthma issues.

But I can’t stop feeling guilty. Especially because she cries and moans for long stretches as soon as we leave the living room (which is her only room). She also cries super loudly early in the morning and wakes me up a lot. I honestly think she has separation anxiety because she was abandoned and alone as a kitten. I know she would love to sleep with us, but I can’t stop thinking it would be a bad idea for my health.

Honestly, I feel like I am stuck between a rock and a hard place, because I’m either harming myself or being heartless.
