Today I figured out just how intelligent my dog is and how he knows how to play me in a pretty annoying way. I should start by saying that for the first 4 years of his life my step mom had complete reign over his training because I was in high school and because of that he didn’t really receive any training. He was raised with her Tibetan mastiff (odin) which are pretty much cats in a big fluffy dog body. So my dog (Vida) was more like a 90lbs puppy, jumping up on people, 0 leash training, and had a weird vendetta against some breeds of dogs because of odin (mostly completely white huskies, and then just any German Shepard.) Which he’s completely over now, he doesn’t jump up on people and he loves every dog he comes in contact with even if they don’t like him. Now we’ve come to the point where I’m training him to stay next to me on trails which he knows how to do but just doesn’t want to do, so we keep practicing. He isn’t great with treat training because he thinks that once he gets the treat he’s done and then can do whatever, so instead I’ve just been teaching him cues such as snapping my finger and pointing to my side or telling him to “wait” and then rewarding with some head pets after a few blocks. All which he knows but since he has a mind of his own he just chooses not to. When I was first training him I guess he learned that he could get away with more things/ I would be more lenient when a person passed as to not seem like such a tight ass/me having hard anxiety over being judged by strangers which he’s made me get over lol. so today when we passed someone, I would notice his gait quickening and him trying to get ahead, now to be clear he’s not interested in meeting the person, he just wants to be a block in front of me, but today I wouldn’t let him get away with it, I told him to wait in different degrees of harshness when he would ignore me or grab his collar if he was starting to veer towards a dog, even when people walked by, and just ignored the looks cause he’s 6 and they’d be even more upset if he was just a crazy doggo 🤷🏽♀️ anyways by the time the walk was over me and him were both pretty annoyed with each other but I think he’s finally understanding that on trails/sidewalks he needs to stay by my side and in big grassy fields he can go explore.
