Recently adopted a cat but I didn't realize how skittish and anxious he is. What can I do to help him get used to us?

I adopted a cat but I didnt realize the extent of his anxiety. He hates loud noises and hides at the sound of people besides me...

The problem is that my family are super loud. I hadn't noticed until I saw how it affected him. I've tried to get them to quiet down some but they still slam doors at all hours of the day, bang around plates and pots and pans when cooking and stomp when they walk. He hides the minute he hears them stomp down the stairs or come near my room.

I've kept him in my room this past week so he could adjust to me but I don't know what else to do for him :( I'm afraid to let him out to the rest of the house and lose all the progress we achieved.
