Hi everyone,
It's past midnight here now but I'm worried sick so I'm posting here to gather any info I can before taking my little guy out to the pee-littered dog park when the sun comes up (single female alone in bad neighborhood) or call the vet.
A week ago I brought home my little 2.5 year old adopted chihuahua (male) and he is of course still getting to know me and my place and has been standoff-ish, but up until now has had no problems peeing or pooping. He doesn't like to go in front of me and won't indicate when he wants to go outside, so we've had some accidents in the house of course, but some outside and some on the pee pad. He also has a good appetite and I've observed him drinking water at least 3 times in the past 24 hours.
However, he hasn't peed since yesterday and it has been 24 hours now. I looked everywhere in my apartment for a puddle I might have missed and the balcony too. I took him out to the sidewalk and moved him around to various spots with no luck. I even just placed a soiled pee pad near his bed area to see if that would stimulate anything, but still nothing.
He otherwise seems in good health and spirits - he isn't straining to go - he isn't trying at all. He had lots of energy and plenty of food and water today. No crying, his belly doesn't seem distended.
In looking online I couldn't find much about sudden urinary retention other than that it can be caused by all these horrific things like stones, cancer, spinal injuries etc. He was going normally up until now so I have a hard time beleiving it could be one of these things god forbid.
Could it just be nerves setting in again? Like I said, he hesitates to go in front of me so normally waits until I'm out of the house or in another room, but I was in the office for 5 hours today.
Any and all help would be appreciated while I wait this night out!!!!!!!
