Cat toilet cleaning - lid or no lid?

I got into an argument about whether to do the regular ol' scoopin' of litter box contents with the lid still on or with the lid completely off. I would love to hear what the general public's view on this is.

So... do you do the regular cat litter box cleaning

• With the lid still on, just opening the cat doors/opening, sticking your arm with the scoop in and doing the deed
• Removing the lid completely and doing it as one would with any lid-less litter box
