Advice: My cat hates dogs, but I'd like to get one.

I have a feeling the answer to this may just be "hold of on getting a dog," but I thought it was worth trying to get some advice. I'm hoping this is the right sub to post this in.

I have two cats that have had a checkered past with dogs. They had one bad experience with a dog that dog terrorized them. For instance, the dog would snarl and chase them around the house. Later, when they were introduced to a different dog (a new puppy) things did not go well. The puppy was playful and curious, but the larger of my two cats would chase it into a corner, hissing and swatting at the scared pup. I'm worried that their experience with the first dog has traumatized them and that they are permanently unwelcoming to dogs.

This wouldn't necessarily be a problem, but my girlfriend has expressed interest in getting a dog. I explained the situation with my cats and she was very understanding. She said she's fine not getting a dog right now, but I feel bad that my cats are preventing her from getting one. I thought I'd do some research to see if there's any hope of making it work, just so I can present the option. If anyone has any suggestions or links to some resources, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
